Nineteenth-Century French Realism

The Realist movement in French art flourished from about 1840 until the late nineteenth century, and sought to convey a truthful and objective vision of contemporary life. Realism emerged in the aftermath of the Revolution of 1848 that overturned the monarchy of Louis-Philippe and developed during the period of the Second Empire under Napoleon III. As French society fought for democratic reform, the Realists democratized art by depicting modern subjects drawn from the everyday lives of the working class. Rejecting the idealized classicism of academic art and the exotic themes of Romanticism, Realism was based on direct observation of the modern world. In keeping with Gustave Courbet's statement in 1861 that "painting is an essentially concrete art and can only consist in the representation of real and existing things," Realists recorded in often gritty detail the present-day existence of humble people, paralleling related trends in the naturalist literature of Émile Zola, Honoré de Balzac, and Gustave Flaubert. The elevation of the working class into the realms of high art and literature coincided with Pierre Proudhon's socialist philosophies and Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto, published in 1848, which urged a proletarian uprising.

How To Draw a Realistic Hair

When I was a kid, i thought drawing the hair was the easiest part because it doesn’t have to be very detail. But, that was totally wrong and drawing hair is getting more and more complicated for me. At least until I find the right technique to draw  realistic hair.

Hair can be the bane of any artist's existence, but with a few good techniques, drawing hair can be easy, fun, and relaxing. Drawing hair presents a challenge for most beginners in figure and portrait drawing. It can still remain a bugbear for quite experienced artists, who may go to all kinds of lengths to avoid having to draw it! It is a great pity to spend time

Drawing the Human Eye

Female Eye by Faith Te

Here is the first tutorial from Art Studio — a female eye. My method in graphite pencil drawing aims to render subjects as realistically as I can. The following is a step-by-step demonstration of how I draw eyes. While I very much hope that it helps you in drawing realistic eyes, do experiment and develop your own way of drawing. I myself sometimes do not follow some of the steps exactly as I like to experiment and try to find better ways of achieving a specific texture or effect. Before I begin, many thanks to Toni-Marie Hudson for the use of her picture. Toni-Marie does animal paintings in mixed media. Visit her web site to view her extremely realistic paintings.

Helpful Drawing Tips and Hints

Here is a list of drawing tips that I have assembled together. Some are things I learned myself and some are helpful tips that other artists have given me. I hope you learn something from these tips.

-when working on a drawing, compare tones with other tones

-if a highlight needs to be more prominent, this can be achieved by making the surrounding area darker

Circulism Technique

Circulism is a technique that many artists use in attaining a realistic skin texture in drawing. People's faces are not perfect and should not be rendered so. Circlism is basically drawing very tiny overlapping and intertwining circles. The circles do not have to be perfect to achieve this effect. Figure 1 simply illustrates circles that are overlapping and intertwining. Of coarse the circles do not need to be this perfect on a drawing, just an example. In figure 2, I did a quick example of how circulism will look when applied to a drawing. I laid down some 3B graphite and blended in a circular motion with a blending stump. The circulism technique may also be used without blending, depends on your preference.

Keep your drawing always clean.
